The Best Safety Razor Blades for a Perfect Shave

Switching from a cartridge razor to a safety razors is one of the quickest, cheapest and easiest ways to improve your share and eliminate razor burn. But it’s the blades you use — not just the razor itself — that determine the quality, closeness and smoothness of your shave.

Most safety razors are designed to accept a wide variety of blades. These blades vary in their sharpness, with some blades providing an extremely sharp edge and others designed to offer less sharpness with a reduced risk of cuts, nicks and other injuries.

There’s no “best safety razor blade” for everyone, but by experimenting with different blades, you can find a razor and blade combination that delivers the best results for you.

To save you ordering every type of razor blade on the market, we’ve tested a wide variety of razor blades and compared them on factors like sharpness, razor burn, suitability for sensitive skin and more.

Below, we’ve listed our choices for seven best safety razor blades for men. If you own a safety razor and want to improve your shave, use the quick links below to jump to our top choices on Amazon.com, or scroll down to read our full, in-depth reviews.

  • If you’re looking for the best safety razor blades for sensitive skin, we recommend the Personna “Israeli” Double Edge Razor Blades, which have sharp edges that won’t pull on your facial hair and cause skin irritation.
  • If you’re looking for the best safety razor blades for newbie wet shavers, we recommend the Personna Double Edge Razor Blades, which have a modest level of sharpness to help you avoid accidentally cutting your skin while shaving.
  • If you’re an experienced wet shaver looking for the sharpest safety razor blades on the market, we recommend the Feather Double Edge Razor Blades, which are by far the sharpest blades we’ve ever used.

What to Look For in a Safety Razor Blade

The type of blades you use in your safety razor have a huge effect on the closeness, quality and smoothness of your shave. Pick a blade that’s too sharp and there’s a serious risk of you cutting your skin accidentally; pick one that’s too dull and you could develop serious razor burn.

Everyone’s skin is different, and a blade that might give you a flawless shave could be too sharp for another person. For this reason, it’s best to test a variety of different blades before you select your favorite. This way, you’ll find out which blade is the best match for your facial hair and skin.

When you’re comparing safety razor blades, there are three key factors that you should keep in mind:

  • Sharpness. Sharper blades require less pressure to remove your facial hair. Because there’s no need to put pressure on a sharp blade, there’s also a lower risk of your skin becoming irritated.

If you get razor burn easily, a sharper blade is more likely to keep your skin soft and free of irritation, whereas a dull blade will require more pressure, more passes and more risk of your skin breaking out into razor burn.
  • Longevity. Some blades, especially very sharp blades, work great on the first shave but quickly lose their edge. If you don’t want to have to replace your blade every two to three shaves, pick a set of blades that last for longer without losing too much sharpness.
  • Smoothness. Some blades, like Feather Double Edge Razor Blades, are very sharp but require quite an aggressive angle to cut smoothly. Other blades aren’t as sharp but have a smoother, less aggressive shave that’s less likely to result in cuts and scratches.

If you’re a wet shaving newbie, using a smoother, less aggressive blade like a Personna Double Edge Razor Blade will help you avoid unwanted cuts that can ruin even the best shave.

Feather Double Edge Razor Blades (Sharpest Safety Razor Blades)

sharpest safety razor blades

Made in Japan by shaving industry giant Feather, these blades are some of the sharpest we’ve ever used. If you want the closest, smoothest shave possible, we highly recommend picking up a set of Feather Double Edge Razor Blades for your safety razor.

We think — and most wet shaving enthusiasts tend to agree — that these are the sharpest razor blades available on the mass market. They glide across the skin and remove facial hair almost effortlessly, making it easy to get a close shave in very little time.

Compared to other blades, we found that the Feather blades offered a smooth shave with less pressure and produced less razor burn. If you have sensitive skin and hate having to run your razor over your facial hair multiple times for a close shave, these blades are a great buy.

Because these are extremely sharp blades, we don’t recommend them for people new to wet shaving. If you’ve never used a safety razor before and you choose to start with these blades, don’t be surprised if you end your first shaving session with a few noticeable cuts.

However, if you’ve got plenty of experience using a safety razor and want to improve your shave (as well as spending less time on each shave), these blades are undoubtedly the sharpest you’ll be able to find.

Feather sells these blades in a pack of 30, which is enough to last for three to six months if you shave every day. At just over $10 per 30 pack, these blades aren’t quite as cheap as the other options on the market, but still offer good value for money.

Gillette 7 O’clock Super Stainless Double Edge Safety Razor Blades

best stainless safety razor blades

Made in Russia, 7 O’clock blades are great all-round safety razor blades. These blades aren’t quite as sharp as the Feather blades listed above, but they’re still more than sharp enough for an extremely close, comfortable and irritation-free shave.

If you’ve previously used Feather safety razor blades and found them too sharp for your liking, these blades are an excellent alternative. They’re slightly sharper than Derby blades, but don’t have the zero-room-for-error sharpness that makes Feather blades quite challenging to use.

Because of this balanced sharpness level, these blades are great first safety razor blades for people new to wet shaving. If you’ve just picked up a safety razor and need a set of blades to start with, these will give you a close shave without the high cut risk of the Feather blades.

As well as being reasonably sharp, these blades are smooth and easy to use. They glide over your skin without any pressure and provide a reasonably close shave even on the first pass. If you have light to moderately thick facial hair, you’ll be able to shave thoroughly in two passes.

It’s important to note that Gillette makes its razor blades in both Russia and India. The blades we’ve linked from this page are the Russian manufactured ones, which are much sharper and smoother than the blades manufactured in India.

At just over $20 for a pack of 100 blades,  7 O’clock Super Stainless Double Edge Safety Razor Blades are extremely cost effective. These blades are a great choice if you want a good balance of sharpness, smoothness and ease of use.

Personna Double Edge Razor Blades (Best Beginner Safety Razor Blades)

best safety razor blades for beginners

Priced at just over 17 cents per blade (and available for as little as 12 cents per blade if bought in bulk), these American made blades from Personna are some of the most cost effective safety razor blades on the market.

Personna manufactures a variety of safety razor blades in the USA and abroad. We’ve reviewed some of their Israeli-made blades further down our list, which we recommend if you have soft or sensitive facial skin.

If you’re looking for a smooth, all-round shave, American made Personna Double Edge Razor Blades are some of the best you’ll find. These blades are sharp enough to offer a smooth and close shave, but not excessively sharp like safety razor blades from brands like Feather.

This makes them a great option for people new to wet shaving seeking a set of blades that will prevent accidental cuts, scrapes and razor burn. Instead of pulling on your facial hair and skin, these blades glide smoothly across your face without any resistance or irritation.

All in all, these are some of the best safety razor blades available for beginners and people who prefer a safe, injury-free shave to an extremely close shave. In spite of being made in the USA, they’re also some of the cheapest blades available, especially when purchased in bulk.

Astra Superior Platinum Double Edge Safety Razor Blades

best razor blades for safety razors

Astra Superior blades are a favorite of the wet shaving community, and for good reason. These blades offer a great mix of sharpness and smoothness, making them popular among people that develop razor burn and skin irritation easily.

From a sharpness perspective, these blades sit in the middle of the pack. They’re sharper than many other blades on the market, but don’t offer the extreme sharpness (and major cut risk) of blades from brands like Feather.

Like the Gillette blades above, these razor blades are produced in Russia. They have a platinum coating, giving them a smooth texture and an irritation-free feel on the face. One great feature of these blades is that each side is labeled, making them easy to use in a single-edge razor.

These razor blades are extremely easy to use. Because they aren’t as sharp as Feather blades, there’s a lower risk of cutting yourself. This also means you’ll need to use two or three passes to get a close shave, but this isn’t unusual or out of the ordinary.

The only real downside of these blades is their longevity. Compared to other blades, these seem to lose their edge faster. Most people can expect to replace these blades after two to three uses.

Astra sells these blades in packs of 100, made up of 20 tucks of five blades. Priced just over $11 per 100, these blades are some of the most competitively priced safety razor blades available. If you prefer a smooth, sharp-but-not-too-sharp shave, Astra Superior blades are worth a look.

Personna Israeli Double Edge Razor Blades (Best for Sensitive Skin)

best safety razor blades for sensitive skin

Personna “Israeli” Double Edge Razor Blades are excellent safety razor blades for people with sensitive skin. These blades are sharp, smooth and easy to use without developing razor burn or accidentally cutting yourself.

Manufactured in Israel (hence the name), these blades are some of the sharpest around. They are slightly less sharp than the Feather blades we reviewed earlier on the list, with a sharpness level that provides a smooth shave on the first pass without ever being too sharp to use easily.

Because these blades are very sharp, there’s no pull on your facial hair. Instead, they glide over your skin smoothly and provide a comfortable, irritation-free shave. Because they don’t pull and require only the bare minimum of pressure, each blade easily lasts for four to five uses.

Another huge benefit of these blades is their smoothness. While Feather blades are far sharper, they don’t match the smoothness of Personna’s Israel-manufactured blades. During production, these safety razor blades are electronically controlled to have the smoothest possible edges.

At $20 per pack of 30, these blades aren’t the cheapest on the market. However, they offer the best mix of smoothness and sharpness of any blades we’ve tested, making them by far the best safety razor blades for people with sensitive, easily irritated skin.

Merkur Double Edge Platinum Blades

best high end safety razor blades with platinum coating

Merkur is well known for producing some of the best safety razors on the market. Although their blades aren’t quite as acclaimed as their razors, the Double Edge Platinum Blades offer a great shave at a reasonable price.

Like several of the other blades on our list, these razor blades are platinum coated to provide a smooth, irritation-free shave. They aren’t quite as sharp as the Feather blades we listed earlier in our review, but still have a sharp enough edge to provide a relatively easy shave.

Because these blades aren’t quite in the “ultra-sharp” category, you’ll need to use two or three passes to get a perfectly smooth shave. The upside of this is that you’re far less likely to cut or nick your skin with these blades than with sharper options from Feather or Personna.

One advantage of these blades is that they’re quite thick. Unlike Feather blades, which flex and warp easily due to their thin profile and extremely sharp edge, these blades feel more forgiving and are better suited for people that prefer a smoother, less zero-risk-for-error shave.

These blades also retain their edge very well. We found that they’re good for at least five shaves each with proper care and attention. Some Merkur blade users report using these blades for two weeks or longer without any skin irritation or razor burn.

All in all, these are excellent blades that offer a good mix of sharpness, smoothness and ease of use. Although they’re more expensive on a per-blade basis than other brands, these blades are a great value buy from a cost-per-shave perspective.

BIC Chrome Platinum Double Edge Razor Blades

good beginner double edge razor blades

BIC Chrome Platinum blades are moderately sharp, making them ideal for beginners that want a close shave without a significant risk of cutting or scratching themselves. These blades can take care of thick facial hair without any issues, although they’ll need three passes for a close shave.

Compared to Feather and Personna blades, these blades are relatively dull. They don’t require an aggressive angle or excess pressure, but they won’t take off quite as much facial hair in one pass as sharper blades from Japanese and Russian brands.

With that said, these blades get the job done. Despite the lack of sharpness compared to some brands, they feel extremely smooth. Each pass feels clean and the chance of the blade catching or pulling on your facial hair is very low, making these blades ideal for beginners.

One slight annoyance of these blades is that they seem to hold shave soap more than others. If you use a lot of shaving cream, expect to spend more time rinsing your razor during your shave than you would with blades from other manufacturers.

All in all, these are good beginner safety razor blades that are available at a fair price. Although they don’t even come close to matching Feather or Personna blades in of sharpness, they have a smooth texture and deliver a clean shave that’s ideal for newbies to wet shaving.
