The 5 Best Razors for Shaving Your Head

Thinking of shaving your head? Whether you’re shaving off your hair to avoid haircuts or to deal with balding, it’s important that you have a sharp, easy-to-use razor on hand to prevent yourself from developing cuts, scratches and razor burn.

Shaving your head is very different from shaving your face, and as such, the razor that you use to take care of your facial hair might not be the best choice for the job. By switching to a different razor, you could get more control over your shaving, letting you avoid injuries and itchy skin.

With single blade, three-blade, five-blade and numerous other razor designs on the market, it’s can be difficult to work out which type of razor is best suited to shaving your hair without hurting your scalp.

Below, we’ve listed our five recommendations for the best razors for shaving your head. Our list includes a variety of cartridge razors and electric razors, ranging in price from under one dollar a piece to upwards of $100.

Cartridge vs. Safety vs. Electric: Which Type of Razor is Best?

In general, we recommend using either an electric razor or a cartridge razor to shave your head, as both offer a greater degree of protection from cuts than safety and straight razors.

This is important if you’re shaving your head for the first time, and aren’t used to using a mirror while you shave. While a double-edge safety razor might give you the closest shave, you’ll get far less protection against accidentally cutting or scraping your skin.

If you’ve shaved your head several times before and know how to use a safety razor, you’ll be safe to use it on your head. Just be aware that you may want to use a slightly less sharp blade than you normally use for your facial hair, as you’ll have less control over the razor.

If you want to shave your head with a safety razor, you can check out our guide to safety razor blades for specific recommendations. Any of the blades designed for sensitive skin will work on your scalp and hair.

To repeat, if you’re shaving your head for the first time, stick with a cartridge razor or electric razor while you learn the process. Once you’ve shaved your head a few times and understand exactly how to do it, you can get a bit more adventurous and use your safety razor.

What To Look For in a Good Razor:

Since you don’t have the same visibility when you shave your head as you do when you shave your face, safety and comfort features that you usually wouldn’t care about become a lot more important.

If you’re shopping for a good razor to use for your head, it’s worth checking that it has all of the following features:

  • A long handle. The shorter the handle, the less control you’ll have over the razor and the more likely you are to cut yourself. This isn’t a big deal when you shave around the top of your head, but it can become an issue when you shave the back and sides.

To avoid a difficult shave, it’s best to pick a disposable or cartridge razor with a relatively long handle. Short handle razors can work, but just be prepared to spend more time with the back of your head in the mirror to make sure you don’t accidentally cut yourself.
  • A sharp blade. The hair on your head is thicker and longer than your facial hair, making blade sharpness more important. Razors with sharp blades remove hair on the first pass, preventing you from having to do several passes that can result in razor burn.
  • Easy cleaning. Since you remove far more hair when you shave your head than you do shaving your face, it’s best to use a razor that cleans easily. Single-blade razors like the BIG Sensitive Single Blade Shaver are easy to clean, saving you time as you shave.
  • A pivoting head. Most people have bumps and contours on their head, particularly near the neck. Without a pivoting head, it’s easy to run your razor over a contour and cut into your skin, resulting in painful wounds and a higher risk of infection.

Almost all of the razors on our list below have pivoting heads to give you more control and a lower risk of injury when you shave.

Now that we’ve covered the four most important features to look for in a razor, let’s look at the best disposable and cartridge razors for shaving your head.

The Best Cartridge Razors for Shaving Your Head

The cheapest way to shave your head is with a cartridge razor. These razors use a removable cartridge, usually with several layered blades, to shave fairly close to your skin. While you may not get the ultra-close shave of a safety razor, you’ll get a smooth shave with minimal irritation.

The best cartridge razors for shaving your head usually have long handles to give you plenty of control, as well as pivoting heads for a smoother shave. We’ve listed our two favorites below, as well as our favorite ultra-budget disposable razor for shaving your head.

BIC Sensitive Single Blade Shaver

best cartridge razor for shaving your head

Priced at just over $10 for a pack of 36, the BIG Sensitive Single Blade Shaver is the cheapest tool available for shaving your head. These razors are sharp enough to do a good job and work well if you have normal skin that isn’t overly sensitive to razor burn.

Like all disposable razors, the Sensitive Single Blade Shazer isn’t a high-end shaving tool. The blade dulls quickly and will only last for one shave, while the razor itself feels a little flimsy and doesn’t have a particularly long handle.

Despite this, these razors are great for shaving your head quickly and easily. With a thick layer of shaving cream applied, the single blade glides along your skin easily and doesn’t require all that much pressure. The final shave, after a pass or two, is close and impressively smooth.

Because these razors only have a single blade, they rinse very easily, meaning there’s little risk of your hair getting caught inside the blade. Since they’re so cheap, you can switch razors in the middle of shaving your head without having to worry about the cost of using a fresh blade.

All in all, the BIC Sensitive Single Blade Shaver is the cheapest tool you’ll find for shaving your head. If you want to spend as little as possible and don’t mind tossing away the razor after you finish shaving, you’ll definitely get plenty of value from this 36 pack of disposable razors.

Gillette Mach3 Men’s Razor

best disposable razor for shaving your head

If you prefer a cartridge razor to a disposable razor, you’ll enjoy shaving with the Gillette Mach3 Men’s Razor. This razor has a long handle and a pressure-adjusting pivoting head that provides lots of control when you shave the back and sides of your head.

Compared to the BIC disposable razor above, the biggest advantage of the Mach3 is that it can pivot and adjust to the shape of your head. This makes it much easier to shave the back of your head, where you have limited visibility, without accidentally scratching or cutting your skin.

Beyond the pivoting head, this is a standard Gillette cartridge razor. It has three blades, giving it a relatively close shave that leaves behind very little stubble. It’s easy to use and lasts for a fairly long time for a cartridge razor, with easy blade lasting for four to six consecutive shaves.

Each cartridge includes two gel strips — one that the top and bottom of the blades — that reduce skin irritation and provide a smoother shave. On the whole, we found that the Mach3 is unlikely to contribute to razor burn unless you pull it too aggressively across your scalp.

On the whole, this is a great cartridge razor that works well for shaving both your head and your facial hair. If you want an all-purpose razor that can manage every aspect of your grooming at a reasonable cost, the Gillette Mach3 is a good choice.

Gillette Fusion ProGlide

best razor for shaving your head smoothly

The Gillette Fusion ProGlide is one of the most complex cartridge razors we’ve seen. It has five blades, the first four of which are designed specifically for sensitive skin. It also has a “FlexBall” head that swivels to adjust to the contours of your face and head.

Normally, we’d roll our eyes at features like this and instead recommend a safety razor. But the Fusion ProGlide is actually a great choice for shaving your head, largely because it responds so well to contours and bumps in your head.

Drag the Fusion ProGlide too quickly over a bump or dip in your head and it will quickly adjust on its own, helping you avoid cuts. Because this razor has such thin blades, it requires far less pressure than other safety razors, making it less likely to cut or burn your skin.

Gillette fave fitted with ProGlide with a larger lubricating strip, which comes in handy when you need to double back over a certain patch of hair for a second pass. This razor also has a long handle, which provides a lot of extra control for shaving the back of your head and neck.

At just over $12, the Fusion ProGlide isn’t the cheapest cartridge razor out there. However, its FlexBall pivoting head and lightweight, low-drag blades make it a great choice if you want more control and less irritation when you shave your head.

The Best Electric Razors for Shaving Your Head

By far the biggest advantage of shaving your head with an electric razor is convenience. Instead of needing to soften your skin and lather up shaving cream, you can get to work on your hair just a few minutes after waking up without any preparation.

As a general rule, an electric razor won’t provide the closest shave. Instead of a flawless scalp, you might be left with a few extremely short hairs. However, shaving your head with an electric razor saves a huge amount of time and simplifies the entire process.

We’ve listed our two favorite electric razors below, both of which are great choices for shaving your head and keeping growth under control.

Philips Norelco Electric Shaver 2100, S1560/81

best electric head shaver

Available for under $40, the Philips Norelco Electric Shaver 2100 is one of the best affordable electric razors on the market. This shaver has three shaving heads that pivot in four different directions to give you a close shave without any cuts or skin irritation.

From a design perspective, this is a very simple electric razor. It has one switch — a simple on and off control — that switches the internal motor on and off. Aside from the standard shaving heads, the only attachment is a small edge trimmer to contour your sideburns and beard.

This ease of use makes the Norelco 2100 ideal for shaving your head. Charge this razor and you’ll get more than enough use out of it for a complete shave. With its contoured handle, it’s easy to use for the back and sides of your head, as well as other hard-to-reach areas.

The 2100 has self-sharpening blades, meaning there’s no need for you to maintain this razor beyond charging the batteries. It has a one-touch open system, meaning you can easily open the razor area and clean the blades using your bathroom tap.

For $40 or less, we can’t think of a better electric razor for shaving your head. While the Norelco 2100 Electric Shaver is very light on features, its design makes it a great low-cost electric razor for managing your hair, beard and sideburns.

Panasonic ES-LA63-S Arc4 Men’s Electric Razor

best electric razor for shaving your head

The Panasonic ES-LA63-S Arc4 is one of the most advanced electric razors we’ve seen. With a pivoting head and four blades, each angled at 30 degrees for an optimal shave, this razor gives a close, irritation free shave with minimal razor burn or leftover stubble.

The ES-LA63-S Arc4 has one of the most incredible motors we’ve seen in an electric razor. The Hyper Performance Dual Motor delivers about 14,000 cuts per minute per blade, creating a total of 56,000 cutting actions per minute across the entire four blades on the head of this razor.

In short, this means the ES-LA63-S Arc4 will remove all of the hair on your head as quickly as it possibly can, with minimal leftovers. Because this razor cuts so often across four blades, there’s no need to go back for a second pass across your scalp after you’ve finished shaving.

Another huge advantage of this razor is its pivoting head. The ES-LA63-S Arc4 pivots as soon as it runs into a bump or change in angle, making it ideal for shaving the back of your head, as well as around dimples or bumps in your neck and jawline.

Finally, this razor includes a pop-up trimmer that’s useful for contouring your sideburns, hairline and beard. This makes it a great all-purpose electric razor that you can use to shave your head, manage your facial hair and even shave away unwanted body hair.

At $109, the ES-LA63-S Arc4 definitely isn’t the cheapest electric razor on the market. However, its excellent build quality, extremely fast motor and sharp blades make it a great option if you’re looking for a high-end razor that you can use to shave both your head and your facial hair.
